If you notice white or yellow mold after opening the package, don’t panic, it’s Trichoderma or Peziza ostracoderma, which are saprophytic fungi that are harmless to humans and plants. These are naturally occurring microorganisms that are found in almost all soils.
Ventilate well and mix the substrate, the mold will disappear. It is pointless to sterilize or use fungicides, because the mold itself is harmless, and there is no suitable fungicide to kill it. In order to prevent mold from appearing, regulate the humidity on the surface of the substrates and ventilate the greenhouse well.
Peat substrates and their composition should remain unchanged – it is not recommended to mix them with garden soil or compost, as this can promote the formation of harmful substances and cause diseases. It is recommended to mix peat with sterile additives (heated sand, perlite, clay, zeolite) – depending on the selected additive, the mixture will become more permeable, more receptive to water, have better aeration, and retain nutrients better.
